How it works
One evening, with Martinet on.
Firm about the boundary, gentle about everything else. What happens at 10:13 pm is different on each phone, so pick yours.
One evening, step by step
The phone keeps up as you read. Drag it to turn it round.
- 10:13 pm
You open Instagram “for a minute”.
Thumb first, plan later. That’s the moment Martinet is for.
- 10:13 pm
Each Reel is covered as it opens.
Its sound goes off. In its place, a flashcard from your own set. Swipe up for the next one, like you would have anyway.
- 10:14 pm
Home stops scrolling.
What’s due, your applications and tonight’s events take the feed’s place, from Canvas and your school’s calendars. Taps still work.
- 10:20 pm
Thursday’s fair, rehearsed.
Going to an event? Swipe through what you’ll say to the people who’ll be there.
- 10:52 pm
Lab report: done.
Caught up? Martinet says so. No streaks, no scolding.
Honest status
It says plainly what it’s doing.
Whether blocking is working, what it needs from you, and what it can’t do. Martinet doesn’t keep a streak and doesn’t scold; it just tells you.
- TikTok’s For You, YouTube Shorts and X’s timeline each have their own switch.
- A commitment period keeps blocking on until the time you chose; the status says “Committed until” when one is running.
- No app can change the Instagram app itself on iPhone. Martinet never claims to: Social is Instagram’s website, inside Martinet.
- If Instagram changes its site and the filter stops, Social says so instead of pretending.
Getting started
Three steps, then it’s on.
Install and sign in.
Google, Microsoft, Apple or an email code. Your sets follow your account.
Quick setup asks four things.
What you’d like in Martinet, which apps need a break, how firm to be with Instagram, and what should show over it.
Switch on the accessibility service.
Android asks once. It’s how Martinet knows a Reel opened and can cover it. The app says plainly if it’s off.
Install and sign in.
Google, Microsoft, Apple or an email code. Your sets follow your account.
Open Instagram through Social.
Sign in to Instagram there, as you would in any browser. Nothing changes in the Instagram app itself.
Screen Time, only if you want it.
Shields for the Instagram app are optional and whole-app, and stay off until you turn them on.
